TIME TO DANCE
Event showcases local talent
1. Femme Fatales
The biennial event Dance in Vancouver showcases local contemporary dancers and choreographers. The 2017 ( and 11th) edition includes an excerpt from Femme Fatale. Through a performance by three female dancers, the Meredith Kalaman work looks at gender socialization. It’s paired with Ziyian Kwan/ dumb instrument’s Dance Kwan Yin. The latter features Kwan in a piece with her 78- year- old father and features live music by cellist Peggy Lee. ( Nov. 23)
2. Spooky Action at a Distance ( Phase One)
Dancer Lesley Telford created this piece in collaboration with poet Barbara Adler. It’s said to be inspired by a phrase from Einstein that refers to particles that are so closely linked they share the same existence. Spooky Action is paired with light breaking broken, a collaboration between Karen Jamieson and Margaret Grenier. ( Nov. 24)
3. 8bitself
In this dance by Mahaila Patterson- O’Brien, the performers move through a series of sculptural movements. Sound and projections by multimedia artist Remy Siu punctuate the movements. It’s in a mixed program with Julianne Chapple’s Self Portrait, Marissa Wong/ TWObigsteps collective’s Surrendurance, and Shay Kuebler’s Feasting on Famine ( excerpt). ( Nov. 25)
4. Second Nature ( excerpt)
Renowned for their aerial dance work, Aeriosa draws on bamboo, as substance and metaphor, for its latest creation. The cast performs to an original score by Juno Award- winning classical composer Jordan Nobles. Second Nature is on a bill with Co. ERASGA’s Tracing Malong. ( Nov. 25)
5. Dialogue
Six male dancers perform in this Wen Wei Wang piece. Based on Wang’s experience as a non- English speaking immigrant to Canada, Dialogue is said to express “our basic desire to be understood, and the loneliness when connections with others are not achieved.” ( Nov. 22)
