Roque has new Vancouver jewelry line

- ALEESHA HARRIS

A jewelry line that strikes the perfect balance between opulence and minimalism can be hard to find.

Cue: Roque Jewelry.

The new Vancouver-based collection features delicate designs, each crafted using luxurious elements such as pearls, metals and assorted gemstones.

Michelle Addison, the brand’s co-founder, chatted with Postmedia News about the launch, striking the perfect balance and what sets Roque apart from the rest of the jewelry set. Q When and why did you start Roque Jewelry?

A We started over a year ago. (Co-founder) Negar Khatami came to me with an idea of doing a collaboration and that idea morphed into starting a whole brand and company. I felt that I was very clear about what I wanted to design and what was missing in the market. Our alignment about making quality pieces has always been effervescent. I have loved styling my clients this past fall with our jewelry. I feel so good about how it all works on different people and different personal styles.

Q Is there a story behind the name?

A We are inspired by strong, independent, powerful women and our branding team at Arithmetic Creative thought of Jacqueline Roque, who was Pablo Picasso’s wife in the last years of his life. She was his muse and he painted over 400 paintings of her. The paintings invoke strength, beauty and uniqueness.

Q What made this the right time to start a jewelry line?

A I think it’s important to always stretch and expand yourself when you are in the creative field. This is definitely forcing me to grow. With my daughter being a little older, and my career at a good place, I thought I could handle another project. I have enjoyed the process of designing beautiful pieces and then watching each piece come to life on the different women who wear our jewelry — it’s even more rewarding than just dressing them in great clothes.

Q What types of materials do you use?

A All our materials are locally sourced, made of 14-karat gold, sterling silver, authentic diamonds, gems — and more. We passionately believe in using real metals and stones for each piece.

Q Where are the pieces made?

A All our jewelry is made by hand in Vancouver — primarily by Negar in Yaletown.

Q What is the price point for Roque creations?

A $55- $1,495 Aharris@postmedia.com
