Facebook Property Brothers offer turns out to be fake

- Melissa Hank, Postmedia News

The Property Brothers giveth, but the Property Brothers would never taketh away. Fans of the Canadian renovation duo are on alert after Colorado native Lisa Hartman reported a Facebook scam involving Drew and Jonathan Scott’s hit HGTV show.

Hartman had written on the social media site that she wanted the Vancouver-raised Scotts to redo her home, prompting someone who claimed to work on the series to contact her via Facebook Messenger.

“When I first saw the message, I got really, really excited,” she told news affiliate ABC 13. “I was like, ‘Oh my God! How am I going to explain this to (my husband)?’ ”

Although the contract seemed official, with authentic-looking logos, Hartman says she sniffed out the scam when she saw names spelled wrong and a demand for money upfront.

Given the Property Brothers’ popularity, there are several scams making the rounds. Jonathan Scott confronted the issue last month on his Facebook page, posting a photo of a fake letter sent to fans.

“Drew Scott and I have become aware that there are more scams circulating out there,” he wrote.

“Remember that we will never contact you from an unverified account or an unverified email address! Watch for the blue check mark and watch out for each other. If you see a scam out there please report it to the appropriate parties.”

All’s well that ends well for Hartman, though: Her husband isn’t a fan of the show anyway.
