Michelle Obama to speak at local event

Three years after the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade brought Hillary Clinton to Vancouver to speak, the business group has announced another big-name American political figure is coming to town.

Michelle Obama will speak Feb. 15 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, board of trade president Iain Black announced Wednesday afternoon on CBC Radio’s On The Coast.

“We have decades of history of promoting women’s leadership,” Black told the CBC’s Gloria Macarenko.

“We are exceptionally excited to host a conversation with Michelle Obama, former first lady of the United States and one of the most inspirational public figures of our time,” Black said in a media release. “Our organization is honoured to provide a platform for distinguished dignitaries and thought leaders such as Michelle Obama to share their insights directly with British Columbians.”

“Michelle Obama is a luminary. She is a role model for millions of women and an inspiring speaker,” said Anne Giardini, the board’s chair and chancellor of Simon Fraser University.

“We at the board of trade are honoured to welcome her to Vancouver. We look forward to hosting an evening of thought-provoking and compelling dialogue at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre with Michelle Obama as our guest.”

Members of the board of trade get first crack at tickets from Jan. 10 to 17. Tickets will go on sale to the public on Jan. 18.
