Burrow to impart wine wisdom on monthly basis

- ANTHONY GISMONDI

Peter Burrow, a longtime, local wine aficionado and storyteller, will be launching monthly Wine Up Wednesdays at Pat Quinn’s Restaurant in Tsawwassen. Burrow is a charter member of the Vancouver Chapter of Society of Wine Educators and brings a fun but knowledgeable approach to wine and food education. The monthly sessions will help you come to know different wine regions with a chance to taste the flavours and styles that make them famous. It all starts Jan. 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a budget wine tasting of bottles to help with the holiday season credit card meltdown. On Feb. 7, it’s great value wines from the Old World, and on March 7 it’s food-friendly wines from the New World. Tickets are $35 per person and include two wine-friendly appetizers. The evenings are intimate with only 16 seats in the private wine room. To book your spots call Nadine at 604948-1533.

Kudos to Hester Creek Estate Winery, which started working with Oliver Elementary School more than five years ago to support their Farm to School Salad Bar program. Twice a week between October and May, students eat a lunch made with ingredients from local farms, including plenty of fresh, seasonal vegetables. Since 2012 the winery has made an annual donation of $11,000 in addition to the donations from their annual Garlic Festival, now going into its sixth year. To date, over $65,000 has gone to the school to run the program and in 2017 the winery was rewarded a Partnership Award through the BCPVPA, recognizing its valuable support provided to principals, vice-principals, teachers, and students.
