FRESH FOOD AT THE NAT

Winter doesn’t mean you have to give up freshness or taste. Shawn Conner presents five reasons to hit the winter market.

-

1. Fresh and tasty

Local produce generally disappears from grocery stores around November. And, in the winter, the produce that is available often isn’t as fresh. For instance, it can be difficult to find decent-tasting carrots before the spring. At the Nat Bailey Winter Market, however, greens, fruit and other winter produce are available all winter long.

2.

Seventy-plus vendors

Farmers, fishermen and local ranchers from all over the province make the trip to the city to sell everything from winter produce, ethically raised meat, fish and eggs, artisanal cheeses, bread, prepared foods, and craft alcohol.

3.

Festive atmosphere

Face-painters, live music and food trucks make the farmers market more than just a shopping destination. Covered sitting areas are also available for when you want to take a load off.

4.

Meet your friendly neighbourhood producer

There’s nothing like getting to know the people who grow, catch, bake and make your food. 5.

Location

The winter market is in the middle of the city, and close to Queen Elizabeth Park, Hillcrest Community Centre, and shopping districts on Main and Cambie streets. A visit to the market can easily be included as part of a daylong outing.
