Police have identified 47-yearold Jwada Hedar-Kadhim as the victim in Metro Vancouver’s first homicide of 2018.

On Tuesday, just before 9 p.m., Burnaby RCMP responded to a report of a fight inside an apartment building in the 6500-block of Telford Avenue near Metrotown Station.

Hedar-Kadhim was found lying inside the lobby, suffering from wounds sustained in a violent confrontation.

“Despite all attempts to revive the individual, he succumbed to his injuries while at scene and his death was deemed a homicide,” said Cpl. Meghan Foster, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, which has taken over the investigation.

Foster would not comment when asked if a weapon was involved or specify what the type of injuries Hedar-Kadhim received.

“It remains early in the investigation, but police believe there was a conflict leading up to the homicide and that this was not a random act of violence,” Foster said in a release.

Hedar-Kadhim was known to police and had a criminal record that included a 2016 conviction for criminal harassment and a pair of 2012 convictions for assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats.

On the night of the killing, one neighbour reported hearing a loud argument coming from inside the apartment building, which was a common occurrence at the residence. “I heard the yelling and the arguing which goes on every day … The guy who rents that (place) was yelling to some guy that it was his house and ‘to get out, get out,” said Orval Bye, who lives across the street.

“One girl that was over there partying with them, she came out and said ‘He’s dead, he’s not breathing, do something, do something.’”
