Arbutus Greenway Design Jam sketches released

From hammocks and meditation zones to bike lanes and bee hives, Vancouverites have a lot of ideas for the Arbutus Greenway.

On Friday, the City of Vancouver released some of the sketches from the 110 residents who took part in the Arbutus Greenway Design Jam last fall.

During the weekend-long workshop, the residents brainstormed ideas for the greenway, a nine-kilometre, 42-acre corridor which goes from False Creek to Vancouver’s west side.

The city also held five open houses on the future design of the greenway.

The project’s senior manager Maggie Buttle says the jam helped her design team collaborate with a diverse group of residents. The ideas will be considered and the preferred design will be shared with the public sometime this spring.

Buttle says many of the designs relate to creating access to the greenway such as bike routes and seating areas. They want play areas with movable elements such as life-size chess pieces or building blocks. The residents also want places to eat, room for food trucks and plenty of nature, including trees and areas for wildlife.

Other illustrations favoured places for public art or hammocks and thinking pods. Those who want to learn more about the ideas proposed can visit the city’s greenway design page.
