Dreaded flu bug can be a pain

I like to pride myself on never getting sick — ha, ha!

These last few days I couldn’t even get myself off the couch and into the shower, let alone out the door for a walk or run. Even my dog ’s sad eyes couldn’t coax me beyond opening the door for him.

These are circumstances beyond our control and there’s not a darn thing one can do except try to rest, drink plenty of fluids and seek medical attention, if necessary.

As for carrying on with any sort of exercise when you are not well? I know from years of experience in general that if your symptoms are above the neck and you feel better if you take over-the-counter medication, then you can probably get some fresh air with a light walk or run.

Just reduce the amount and intensity or consider a regenerative activity like yoga.

But if what you’re experiencing includes body aches, pain, fever and terrible fatigue, then forget the running shoes until you can at least “imagine” getting outside and then just start with a walk around the block.

Once you’re healthy again, take care not to simply jump back into your program. Start with half of what it asks and take a week to gradually get back to where you were to avoid injury.

So here we are, more than halfway through the program already.

Enjoy mapping out an approximate 5K this week for yourself to celebrate how far you’ve come.

Remember to take it easy if you’re like me and find yourself glued to the couch — not because of the Olympics on TV, but because you need your rest.

We never fully appreciate our health until somehow it escapes us.

Take care. I promise I’ll be better next week!
