GET SET TO DINE IN STYLE THIS PATIO SEASON
As we move into spring and the days get longer and warmer, our thoughts slowly turn to outdoor entertaining. Although we may be a few weeks away from dining on the patio, it’s not too early to start thinking of assessing and refreshing that outdoor decor.
The season sees the continually popular soft, muted pastel shades of pink, green and blue carried forward in table linens, napkins, throws, pillows and the like, offset by bright, bold spring florals. Mix-and-match eclecticism is the ongoing style favoured by interior designers this spring, encouraging people to embrace decor that is personal, meaningful and reflects their personalities. For some quick inspiration, here’s a look at a few things on offer.
COSY UP
It never hurts to have a stack of throws and blankets on hand to take the chill off spring afternoons and evenings outdoors. H&M has released a gorgeous selection that includes the popular blush and powder pink shades, alongside Scandinavian greens and greys.
“Our new arrivals for spring introduce clean and sculptural designs in fresh, soft shaded colours, an easy way to renew your home and bring in spring freshness,” says Eveline Kravaev, head of design at H&M Home. From $25 at H&M Home
BASH
Patios are a great place to experiment with bold, unconventional decor, because they’re party-like and casual in setting. Tumbler glasses and champagne bucket by Marioluca Giusti are both fun, elegant and practical. They ’re made from acrylic, making them very durable. Available at Atkinson’s of Vancouver the champagne bucket retails for $263 and the tumblers $42 each.
MUCH ABOUT MATCHA
There’s a new colour for spring, and it’s matcha green, seen here in Chilewich’s Mini Basketweave placemats, “inspired by the indescribable shades in a flower garden.” The placemats feature a “toned-down” version of traditional basket-weaving techniques, and the collection was expanded to include a range of bright pastels for spring. Available at www.chilewich.com/ store, the oval placemats retail for $16.50, and the rectangles for $14.50.
OLD WORLD
Investing in a couple of design pieces that have stood the test of time and can be used year in and year out is a great way to reflect your own design style, be it indoors or out. Spanish designer Nani Marquina is reissuing her company’s iconic Oil Cruet, originally designed by her father, Rafael Marquina in 1961. “This vessel was my first connection with the world of design when I was a child,” Marquina says.
BOUQUET
The easiest and most budgetfriendly way to refresh your patio decor is with a fantastic tablecloth. Bright, cheerful floral prints are everywhere this spring, such as in the Spring Bouquet tablecloth by Simons Maison. The beauty of these prints is that don’t have to add anything else to the table.
