HERE’S YOUR HELPFUL GUIDE TO AN ENJOYABLE RACE DAY

-

RACE PACKAGE PICK UP

Individual race package pickup is at B.C. Place Stadium at 777 Pacific Blvd.

At B.C. Place Stadium, you will collect your race number, tech shirt (or cotton T-shirt for Mini participants) and timing tag at our Vancouver Sun Run Fair.

The fair runs on Friday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Access to the Vancouver Sun Run Fair is at street level (located under Gate E on Pacific Blvd.).

Admission to the Vancouver Sun Run Fair is free and there will be plenty to see and learn about the event. The official Vancouver Sun Run merchandise booth will be selling technical running gear, with great deals on running shoes and souvenir items, while other sponsors will be sampling many items.

Shirts not collected before race day will be forfeited.

There is no race-day package pickup, except for out-of-town entrants, who may obtain their race numbers, shirts and timing tags on Sunday from 6:30-8 a.m. on the second floor of the Hyatt Regency Vancouver. Entrants who must pay long-distance charges to phone Vancouver from home qualify for race-day collection.

TEAM PACKAGE PICKUP

If you’re part of a team participating in the Youth Category or the Canadian Western Bank Team Challenge, please pick up your package from your team captain.

Team captains, please note: Your pickup location will be at Gate H at B.C. Place Stadium on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There’s no team pickup on Saturday or race day.

IN-TRAINING CLINIC MEMBERS

If you are a member of an In-Training Clinic, please collect your tech shirt, race number and timing tag from your clinic coordinator.

IMPORTANT — RACE BIB LOOK UP!

Before going to the Vancouver Sun Fun Fair to pick up your race bib, shirt and timing tag, it’s recommended you go online to look up your bib number to avoid long lineups. Visit vancouversunrun.com and click on our ‘Bib Look Up’ tool after April 18 to find your details.

TIMING TAG

The Vancouver Sun Run is using the MyLaps BibTag timing system. Your timing tag is already placed on the back of your race bib.

PRE-RACE

Pick up and verify your BibTag at Race Package Pickup. It records the time it takes you to get from start to finish, no matter where in the pack you begin. Your BibTag is attached to the back of your race number (race bib).

Do not remove it. Attach your race bib to the front of your shirt before the race. No race bib = No results. Do not crumple your race bib or damage it in any way; a crumpled/damaged race bib won’t work.

RACE DAY

You must wear your Race Bib as provided or you won’t be timed. Ensure your Race Bib is clearly visible; the BibTag won’t work properly if it’s covered with clothing. If you’re wearing “throw away ” clothing before the race, be sure to check that your race bib isn’t pinned to it. You must cross the timing mats at the start and finish lines to receive a finish time. No other timing method will be used.

START ZONE

You have access to your start zone only through the allocated access street (see the back of your bib for the start line map for your start zone).

Please note the Vancouver Sun Run event team is working hard to improve every runner’s start time experience by corralling participants based on estimated finish times. Runners are more than welcome to come down well in advance of their start time to enjoy the atmosphere, but we ask that everyone respect their colour-coded bib start time and spend some time reviewing the start map.

The Neurotics will perform on the start line stage beginning at 8 a.m. on Sunday. Club 16 Fitness instructors lead a warm-up starting at 8:30 a.m.

Competitive (unassisted) wheelchair racers start at 8:40 a.m.

The Elite Women’s race starts at 8:50 a.m. Walkers and runners are grouped into waves according to their estimated finish time, and start at timed intervals.

This allows you to run at your pace with other participants of similar ability. The first wave starts at 9 a.m. There will be multiple waves.

If you’re a walker in the purple and red zones, you’re encouraged to arrive at the start by 9 a.m., but be aware that you may not cross the start line until about 10 a.m. Please be patient — it’s worth it! With the Timing Tag system, you have an individual net time, so you don’t need to worry about the time it takes you to get to the start line. Your timing will begin when you cross the start.

For the safety of all participants, Nordic Walkers, strollers, baby joggers and assisted wheelchairs must start in the red zone, regardless of ability.

At the start zone, assemble behind the balloon arch that matches the colour of your bib. See the map on the back of your bib for access streets, or check the map on E1.

Starting positions are on a firstcome, first-served basis within each zone. Arrive early. The yellow zone closes at 8:30 a.m. Competitive wheelchair start is 8:40 a.m. You must use the access street listed on the back of your race number to get to your colour-coded zone.

Yellow number access is from Burrard, green numbers from Hornby, white numbers from Howe, purple numbers from Granville and red numbers from Seymour. Entry to all zones will be controlled for safety.

RACE FINISH

Quickly move through the finish line chute. Proceed to the Wrap Party to meet up with friends and family!

MEET ME UNDER THE Q

If you’re meeting someone before the race, pick a site several blocks away, such as the library, post office or Waterfront station.

Avoid the art gallery, Hyatt Regency Vancouver, Hotel Vancouver, Christ Church Cathedral and other landmarks near the start zone as they will be awash with Sun Runners.

Meeting after the race?

Go to the A to Z meeting area inside B.C. Place Stadium.

Determine under which letter you will meet. Team Ziggy might meet under the Z, for example, or the Albatross family under the A. See map on E5.

OFFICIAL RACE PHOTOS

Marathon-Photos.com is the official race photographer of the event.

To view and order your photos online, go to vancouversunrun. com and click on “results.”

Find your name and there will be a photo icon by it; click on that icon and you can now view and order your photos. Please allow a few days for the photos to be uploaded, as we’re a large event.

If you subscribe your email address in advance, they will send you a direct link to your images once they’re online.

For the best photos, participants should have their race bib numbers clearly visible — and smile!

FINISHER’S CERTIFICATE

At the end of the race, be proud of your accomplishment and commemorate your participation with your own official finisher’s certificate. Simply visit the Vancouver Sun Run website (vancouversunrun.com) on April 22 to print off your very own copy. To download your certificate, find your name on our “results” page and click on the certificate icon located on the bottom right banner.

SEE YOUR NAME IN PRINT

All 10K and Shaw Mini Sun Runners will have their names printed in The Vancouver Sun so look for your result and race highlights on Monday, April 23.

Online results will also be available at vancouversunrun.com.

2.5K SHAW MINI SUN RUN

The Shaw Mini Sun Run offers participants a 2.5K fun filled route that starts at B.C. Place Stadium at 765 Pacific Blvd. and finishes back at the start line on Pacific Boulevard. It’s perfect for those who prefer a shorter route or for families (12 and under age group).

The Shaw Mini Sun Run starts at 8 a.m., with festivities that include music, Tickles the Clown and Family, a caricaturist, juggler, mascots, tattoo artists, inflatables and performers to entertain Shaw Mini Sun Runners before and throughout the race. Check the map on E4.

The event is not timed, but there will be a clock for those who would like to track their time.

Each Shaw Mini Sun Runner receives an individual race bib number and each participant receives a finisher’s ribbon.

Post race, Mini Sun Runners can head into B.C. Place Stadium to replenish spent energy levels with samples from Oasis Juice, Nature’s Path Cereal & Bars, Canadian Springs Water, fruit from Safeway, Herbaland Naturals, BOOST and coffee from Tim Horton’s plus a variety of fun activities within the Shaw Mini Kids Zone.

If you haven’t already registered for the Shaw Mini Sun Run and wish to, registration is in person only at B.C. Place Stadium on Friday and Saturday. There is no race-day registration.

Visit vancouversunrun.com for more information.

CLOTHING TIP!

Layer your clothing. If you overheat, peel off the layers. Don’t forget to bring a change of dry, warm clothes for the wrap party.

GEAR CHECK

You may use the $5 gear-check service to transport your clothes from the start area to the finish zone. Drop your gear until 8:50 a.m. at the trucks, which are parked on all access streets in the start zone.

The truck for the red zone will be parked on Howe, not Granville, and will be open until 9:20 a.m. Buses still run on Seymour and Richards on Sun Run morning.

The gear-check tag on your bib will identify your gear; submit the tag with your gear.

Collect your gear at the South East of the Finish line across from Roger’s Arena in the Concord Pacific parking lot near the finish line by 1 p.m. Show your race number to claim your gear.

Please do not check valuables and note that Gear Check can accommodate only as much as you can cram in the shopping-sized plastic bag. Items left on the street at the start area will be collected by, and donated to, The Salvation Army.

The Vancouver Sun Run is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

COMFORT & SAFETY

Watch for washrooms, first aid stations and Canadian Springs water stations along the course.

Two hundred medical volunteers and paramedics will travel the course on bicycles. First aid attendants with expertise in sports injuries will follow the waves of runners.

Medical facilities will be located at English Bay, Fir and Fourth and at the finish area with an easy-tospot medical banner.

There will also be a big water station just past the finish line with plenty of water.

Plenty of oranges and bananas will be served at the post-race party inside B.C. Place Stadium, courtesy of Safeway.

LOST KIDS

Tell your children that if they become separated from you during the run to look for a police officer or for one of the communications crew (situated along the route with radios), the volunteer crew (in blue T-shirts) or medical crew (red T-shirts).

They will bring your child to B.C. Place Stadium, Event Information Booth. Lost children will be cared for in this secured area until they can be reunited with their families.

ETIQUETTE

The Vancouver Sun Run is a funfilled community event and in order for everyone to have an enjoyable and safe experience, consideration of fellow runners, volunteers and race officials is a must.

Please visit vancouversunrun. com for more information on etiquette guidelines as we want to ensure everyone has an enjoyable experience.

A LITTLE CHARITY

The Vancouver Sun Run’s primary mandate is to promote health, fitness and community spirit and to support amateur athletics through the Vancouver Sun International Track Classic via the Achilles Track Society. The Vancouver Sun Run also supports children and family literacy through the Raise-a-Reader Campaign.

While the Vancouver Sun Run is not designated as a charity event, close to $2.625 million in proceeds from the Vancouver Sun Run have been donated to important causes since 1985.

The Vancouver Sun Run offers even more ways to make a difference. Every registrant has the opportunity to create a personal pledge page for one of the Vancouver Sun Run’s charitable partners and to raise funds through participation in the event. This year’s charitable partners are B.C. Children’s Hospital, B.C. SPCA, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Ronald McDonald House B.C. & Yukon and the B.C. Cancer Foundation.

Any money personally raised using the runner’s pledge page will go directly to the selected charity.

How? Visit vancouversunrun. com, simply follow the links on the registration page to learn more, set up your pledge page and then be off and running for the cause of your choice.

FUN LOVES COMPANY

You don’t need to be a runner, a jogger, or a walker to have fun. Invite family and friends to watch the race from the sidelines, and join in the fun and festivities on the course and at the finish line.

The party starts at B.C. Place Stadium at 8:30 a.m., just in time to entertain the Shaw Mini Sun Runners and the first of the elite runners crossing the finish line at about 9:30 a.m. There will be snacks, samples and entertainment for everyone.

Walkers can stop en route at the Walkers’ Pit Stop for water, fruit and entertainment.

At 11 a.m., presentations will be made to the top finishers and the top Canadians, both male and female, and to the winners of the masters and wheelchair divisions.

GIVE YOUR SHOES MORE MILEAGE

Support those in need and donate your pre-loved shoes at one of our Sun Run Stores.

Running, athletic, dress/work shoes and hiking boots are collected, washed and distributed through the ShoeRenu Foot Care Clinics managed by the Salvation Army Harbour Light and in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Vancouver Quadra.

Visit sunrunstores.com for a list of Sun Run Stores.

AN EASY RIDE TO THE RUN

If you must drive, you’re advised to arrive by 7 a.m. Street parking in the area of the run is limited (and remember, there’s a 30-minute to two-hour limit to metered parking).

A number of streets, both at the start line and along the route, will be closed to traffic during the morning. There’s some paid parking adjacent to B.C. Place Stadium, near the finish line. Seasoned Sun Runners park near the finish zone and jog back to the start zone.

Sun Runners who plan to cycle to the start line have the option to secure their bicycle with BEST (Better Environmentally Sound Transportation), The Bicycle Valet. Space to park 100 bikes will be available at B.C. Place’s Gate C.

All major TransLink bus services run on Sunday morning.

SeaBus will sail from Lonsdale Quay at 7:02 a.m. (an hour earlier than normal) and provide a 15-minute service through the morning and early afternoon. SkyTrain will start service on the Expo/Millennium Lines half an hour earlier than normal, with the first train leaving King George at 6:38 a.m., Lafarge Lake-Douglas at 6:26 a.m., and Waterfront at 7:20 a.m. SkyTrain will operate “rush hour” level service during the time before the start and into the afternoon, as crowds head home.

Once again, Canada Line will launch at its usual time of 5:02 a.m. leaving Richmond-Brighouse to Waterfront Station, with extra service for incoming crowds starting at 7 a.m. Coast Mountain Bus will have a number of reroutes in effect, taking the buses away from Georgia between Pender and Richards, the West End, Granville Street downtown, Burrard Bridge, Cambie Bridge and 2nd Avenue in Kitsilano. Buses that normally use Georgia will travel along Pender between Cardero and Richards.

Full details on the reroutes can be found online at translink.ca.

West Vancouver Blue Bus will also operate the usual Sunday schedule, but add service between West Van and downtown before and after the run. West Van buses that normally use Georgia will travel along Pender between Cardero and Richards.

Those coming on SkyTrain can avoid long lineups at ticket vending machines after the Run simply by purchasing two tickets at the station in the morning when they’re coming in, and saving one of those tickets for the trip home.

Please move down the aisle to make more room for your fellow SunRunners if the bus or train is crowded. Further information on service changes can be found online at translink.ca or by calling Customer Service at 604-953-3333.

Transit customers will have to pay only a single-zone fare of $2.75 for an adult fare and $1.75 for a Concession fare to travel throughout the entire bus, SkyTrain and SeaBus network. Concession fares apply to children ages 5-13, secondary school students ages 14-19 with a valid photo ID, seniors 65 and older with proof of age, and HandyCard holders riding conventional transit.

False Creek Ferries and Aquabus Ferries will also be running extra ferries on Sun Run morning.

Visit granvilleislandferries.bc.ca and theaquabus.com for schedules and fares.
