City’s new water rules come into effect on May 1
The City of Vancouver has reduced the number of days you can water your lawn.
Under the new drinking water conservation bylaw approved Wednesday by city council, the restrictions will start on May 1 and allow watering on just two days a week, instead of three.
The city is following the lead of Metro Vancouver’s drinking water conservation plan.
“There is increasing pressure on our regional water supply from growing population and climate change. Seasonal watering restrictions help us ensure we prioritize our treated drinking water for where it is needed most — cooking, cleaning, and drinking,” said Daniel Roberge, Vancouver’s director of water, sewer and green Infrastructure.
Metro Vancouver homes with even-numbered addresses can put their sprinklers out Wednesdays and Saturdays from 4-9 a.m., while odd-numbered addresses can water lawns Thursdays and Sundays from 4-9 a.m.
Violators face fines of $250 to $1,000, and the regulations remain in effect until Oct. 15.
The city says Vancouver lawns generally need only one inch of water for one hour a week, including rainfall, to stay healthy and green.
