Message from the Chair, CAGP Greater Vancouver Area Chapter

- Michael Blatchford Partner, Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP / S.E.N.C.R.L., s.r.l.

On behalf of the Greater Vancouver Area Chapter of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP), we are so pleased to provide the latest edition of the LEAVE A LEGACY ™ planned giving supplement. This is the 20th edition, and our Chapter has put in an incredible amount of work to make this the best one yet.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ is one of the key offerings of CAGP locally, and the main avenue by which we “give back” to the public and our communities by providing toptier educational articles about the importance of personal planning and philanthropy. This edition’s theme is “a better world through strategic giving”, which is the mission statement of CAGP.

CAGP is the only Canadian professional association that brings charitable fundraisers and professional advisors together to learn and promote philanthropy in Canada. Planned giving is a toolkit that can help donors to accomplish their philanthropic goals. As an organization, CAGP supports strategic giving across Canada by developing knowledge, promoting philanthropy and advocating for incentives to charitable giving. Members of CAGP work with donors to ensure that their gift is made in a way that takes into account the specific goals and financial circumstances of the donor.

As an advisor who works closely with charities, I am inspired by the passion of charity professionals and the generosity of donors. The power that is unlocked in bringing the two sides together is enough to change the world. The philosopher William James said “the great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.” At CAGP we believe that every individual has the ability to make a lasting contribution to the world around them, leaving the world better than they found it. We do this through caring, teaching, participating, volunteering and by supporting the charitable causes that matter to us. Our legacy is something we build throughout our lives, something we teach to our children and planned giving can allow us to make an ever bigger impact on the world.

Through the messages in this supplement, we want to inspire everyone to think about the causes that matter to them and consider making a planned gift to the charities of your choice. I encourage you to ponder on your own connection to charitable causes that matter to you, and to reach out to any of the authors, or to a member of CAGP for further information.

Thanks for reading.
