CAMPING, CARIBOU AND CARING FOR THE FUTURE

- SARAHMAY PHILANTHROPY OFFICER ECOJUSTICE

Ecojustice donor David Moffat remembers spending much of his childhood with his family on camping trips, and throughout his life he has continued to have unforgettable experiences in nature.

“One particularly vivid memory from my early 20s is of a camping trip I took with friends to the Rocky Mountains. We heard a roaring thunder in the distance, and suddenly a herd of caribou went right through our campground. It was incredible.”

David feels compelled by his love of nature to take action to protect it and supports many environmental causes. “I support Ecojustice because it uses the power of the law to defend animals that can’t speak for themselves.”

Among his many concerns for the environment, David is especially passionate about the Southern Resident Killer Whale and other marine wildlife. He also feels strongly that everyone should be able to breathe clean air, and he believes that every Canadian should have the right to live in a healthy environment.

Recently, David’s vision for the future inspired him to deepen his connection to Ecojustice through a gift in his will. When explaining his decision, David says, “I want the organizations that I support today to continue to benefit from my support in the future. Since I can’t spend it when I’m gone, I want my money to be put towards a good purpose.”

Leaving a gift in your will, as David has, is a wonderful way to ensure long-term support of your favourite organizations. Your bequest, no matter how big or small, is an investment that will have a meaningful, positive impact on your community. And it’s a lot simpler than you might think. When writing your will, simply ask your lawyer how you can include gifts to your favourite charities after your loved ones are taken care of. Or, if you already have a will, you can work with your lawyer to create a codicil that includes gifts to the causes you care deeply about.
