‘Subtle’ jewelry that makes a statement

- ALEESHA HARRIS aharris@postmedia.com

If you’re in the market for a pretty gemstone pendant necklace or an oversized statement metal ring, you may want to check out Lolo Jewellery.

The Coquitlam-based accessories brand specializes in creating dainty jewelry designs and curated handbag collections that are worthy of a second look.

Lorena Ponis, the brand’s designer and owner, chatted about her business background, what drew her to jewelry and what’s new for spring.

Q When and why did you start Lolo?

A I always wanted to have my own business. I started my first venture at eight years old baking cookies, packaging them and selling them to the teachers at my school. My goal was to raise money for hungry kids. I always loved creating new things to share with others. Years later, I studied international business because I wanted to travel and work. I worked with and travelled to Latin America, representing companies and their products for many years. However, in 2004, I had the urge to be creative again, but this time I wanted to use my experienced business background to develop my own line.

Q Did you have a background in jewelry design at all?

A Jewelry and accessory design was something I always had a passion for. It first started off as an idea and then when introduced into the market, it quickly took off. As the business grew so did my passion for this idea. Not long after, I decided to leave my job and focus entirely on Lolo Jewellery & Accessories.

Q Is there a story to the name?

A Lolo is my nickname. As a child, I couldn’t pronounce Lorena when I first learned to speak and I instead introduced myself as Lolo. To my family and friends I was and still am Lolo. When I started selling jewelry, I sold personalized name bracelets for children. Using my childhood nickname just seemed easy and appropriate for the line at the time.

Q What do you sell?

A I sell high-end fashion jewelry and handbags. The line is timeless, classic and always versatile.

Q Who is your target customer?

A A woman who is soft, subtle yet bold and fearless. She’s someone who can make a statement with her presence alone. The jewelry reflects this. The pieces are subtle yet they make a statement and say a lot about one’s confidence and inner beauty.

Q Where are the designs created?

A All of our pieces are designed locally. Most of them are made locally, as well. However, we have a talented team who hand craft many of our designs in their workshops in Mexico and India.

Q What’s new?

A Lolo will be introducing some bolder pieces and new stones with a pop of colour. As well, we will be introducing two new leather handbags that will be on trend yet classic and a great everyday go-to.

Q Where can people check the line out?

A Online at Lolo.ca.

Q How much do the designs retail for?

A Pieces range from $80 to $220.
