Man killed at ferry terminal wanted for carjacking

In a statement, the RCMPthat might be connected to the confrontat­ion at Departure Bay.

On Monday, just before noon, RCMP in Vernon were called to a shooting.

Officers found am anal one in a vehicle with gun shot wounds. He was taken to hospital with life threatenin­g injuries.

A descriptio­n of the alleged shooter was publicized: white, five foot nine, with blond hair.

Witnesses told police that he left the area in a 1996 grey Ford Crown Victoria that had a sticker in the lower passenger side rear window.

About 1:25 p.m ., the vehicle was seen in West Kelowna.

In Penticton at 8:35 p.m ., am an was seen with a gun at a motel, and RCMP were called. The man fled before officers arrived. His descriptio­n matched that of the shooter in Vernon.

Moments later, Penticton RCMP were called to a car jacking. The victim, who was driving a bluish grey Pontiac Vibe, told police that a man approached him and asked for a ride to the hospital to see a sick family member.

Inside the car, them an attacked the driver, and forced him from the vehicle. The driver suffered serious but non -life-threaten in g injuries.

The attack er matched the them an at the Vernon shooting and at the Penticton hotel.

On Tuesday morning, about 8:35 a.m ., Penticton RCMP learn ed that the stolen car was on a ferry to Departure Bay terminal in Nanaimo.

Nanaimo RCMP and the Island District Emergency Response Team were called to arrest the man.

They planned to stop the suspect in a controlled environmen­t as the vehicle disembarke­d, said Island district RCMP commander Chief Supt. Sean Sullivan.

As police tried to stop them an, he exited the vehicle with what officers believed was a fire arm, Sullivan said.

“Shots were fired, resulting in the male sustaining serious injuries .”

Them an died later in hospital. Whether the man, in fact, had a fire arm will be part of an the Independen­t Investigat­ions Office, which probes police involved injuries and deaths.

The name of them an who was killed has not been released.

“As it is our policy, we do not provide the names of affected persons ,” IIO’s chief civilian director Ron MacDonald said.

“Our priority at this time is to speak with witnesses without providing informatio­n that may taint their perception of what transpired .”

RCMP is asking for help in locating the Ford Crown Victoria, with B.C. licence DR 258 M, and for witnesses to what happened in Vernon and Penticton.
