Abbotsford high school math teacher charged with sex assault, exploitation
An Abbotsford high school teacher has been charged with sex offences involving students.
Henry Kang, a 50-year-old Abbotsford resident and a teacher at Robert Bateman secondary school, has been charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual exploitation in connection with incidents at two schools.
The Abbotsford school district has erased Kang’s bio from its website, but a cached version of the page notes that he taught math at Robert Bateman. Police say he previously taught at W. J. Mouat.
Abbotsford police arrested Kang following a major crimes unit investigation that began in January, after police were contacted by the Abbotsford school district.
School superintendent Kevin Godden said Kang was placed on leave while police investigated.
“The district has procedures in place for swift and appropriate action when serious allegations of this nature are brought to our attention, and these procedures were properly enacted in this case. We are deeply concerned about these allegations, and will continue to co-operate with the Abbotsford police department and Crown (counsel) as this matter is investigated,” Godden said in a statement.
“We want to emphasize that the safety of our students is our top priority. Every day we commit to providing safe and caring learning environments for all of our students, and we will continue to ensure that this is the case in all of our schools.”
Kang was charged on May 17. His next court appearance is set for June 28.
Police say because the two victims were youths, specific details of the investigation will not be released.
