Audi teases front end of its new Q8 SUV

- NICHOLAS MARONESE

Audi showed off the face of its new Q8 via a sketch in late May, revealing a bold new grille for the flagship SUV ahead of the truck’s full unveiling, which took place on Tuesday.

More brash than the company’s Q7, the Q8 features a front end dominated by a grille with a thick surround and strong vertical strakes. Large lower vents in the corners flank the grille.

The release of the sketch follows up a new teaser rendering of the rear end Audi shared two weeks ago.

The theme there seems to be more about sleekness, which would blend well with the fastback styling of the Q8.

That new low roofline means that even though the Q8 sits on the same MLB platform as the Q7, it won’t be made available with three rows of seating, aiming instead for a sportier feel featuring a slightly shorter length and a slightly wider stance. The truck will be Audi’s counterpart to the Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Bentayga (underpinned by the MLB, too), though rumours are we can expect an SQ8 performance variant that could come powered by a 470-horsepower hybrid drivetrain.

The Q8’s full debut happened on Tuesday in Shanghai.

Production begins in Slovakia later in 2018.
