Report into 2015 RCMP shooting sent to Crown

-

The Independent Investigation Office, B.C.’s police watchdog, is forwarding its file on a 2015 shooting involving Burnaby RCMP officers to the B.C. Prosecution Service for their consideration of charges.

The incident happened on March 1, 2015.

A man was shot by RCMP officers following a 3 a.m. robbery at a 7-Eleven store at Canada Way and Edmonds Street.

According to police, “officers engaged two males and attempted to effect an arrest.

“During this interaction, shots were fired and the two males subsequently fled the area in a vehicle.

“That vehicle was located after it crashed near Canada Way and Rosewood Avenue,” the IIO said in a release.

One man was tracked down with the help of a police dog and taken to hospital for treatment of a nonlife threatening gunshot wound. The other man was taken into custody.

No names were released. After a three-year investigation, the IIO, the civilian oversight agency that examines officer related incidents resulting in death or serious harm, has sent its report to the Crown. In approving charges, B.C. Prosecution Service must be satisfied there is a substantial likelihood of conviction based on the evidence gathered by the IIO and that the prosecution is in the public interest.
