Lindros still waiting for NHL to step up

- Michael Traikos

It was in 2007 when Eric Lindros donated $5 million to London Health Sciences Centre.

Ten years later, he challenged the NHL’s teams to each donate $1 million to concussion research. But with commissioner Gary Bettman still denying that a link exists between head trauma and CTE, Lindros isn’t waiting by the mailbox for cheques to arrive any time soon.

The same cannot be said of the NHL Players’ Association, which today is expected to announce a donation to concussion research.

“They have their reasons and it’s unfortunate that it comes down to business,” Lindros said of the NHL.

“I still believe there’s hope. I’m holding out some hope for some blue skies ahead.

“But at least the players’ association has made a move and the guys have put forward some money in a fashion where they’re challenging people in the community to help out as well. I think it’s terrific.”

Lindros also praised San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture for organizing his second annual casino fundraiser in London, Ont., for concussion research.

“London’s a hotbed for players and Logan’s got lots of friends,” said Lindros.

“Hats off to Logan and his group for pulling this together. And for people wanting to go. It’s not an event without people wanting to go. Thank you.”
