Firefighting crew rescues puppies from roadside

-

Smiles have been few and far between on the front lines of the 550 fires currently burning across the province, but members of one B.C. Wildfire Service firefighting crew were smiling ear to ear on Sunday after rescuing five puppies near Vernon.

The initial attack crew had just finished a shift working a fire in the Monashee Complex when they spotted a group of puppies on the side of the road.

After determining there were no houses or properties nearby that the dogs could have wandered from, the B.C. Wildfire Service says the crew decided to scoop the dogs up and bring them with them.

“They are now being well fed and cared for, and the SPCA has been contacted,” the B.C. Wildfire Service said in a Facebook post that has been shared more than 2,400 times.

The puppy-saving B.C. Wildfire Service crew received kudos from Facebook followers for the doggie rescue.

“Heroes with a handful. Hats off to all of you for rounding these pups up. Must have been quite the ride back to base camp ... hahaha. Thanks for the rescue and most importantly thank you for all the hard work out there on the fires,” said Linda Rutley.

“This crew absolutely did the right thing. You don’t leave a bunch of puppies to wander around a road where one or all could be hit. Might be time for the owner to invest in some different fencing,” added Tasha Ho.
