Passions puts on the ritz for Dr. Peter foundation

- Mia Stainsby

Now in its 15th year, Passions carries on its tradition of putting on the ritz to fundraise for a worthy cause: Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation. The annual event has raised $1.4 million. The Dr. Peter Centre serves 80,000 meals a year and provides a 24-hour licensed care residence, supportive housing and a day health program.

Passions 2018 takes place Sept. 26 at Performance Works on Granville Island with 20 of the city’s best restaurants at the food stations (includes Boulevard, CinCin, Forage, H2 Rotisserie, Joe Fortes, Maenam, Minami, Tojo’s, Araxi, West and Honey Salt). General admission tickets are $225; VIP with first-access and gift bag tickets are $300. “To have such an incredible group of culinary professionals, sponsors, and volunteers dedicating their time to making this event a success year after year is a testament to Dr. Peter and his legacy,” said Nathan Fong, Passions founder and committee co-chairman with Michael Barker-Fyfe. 100 SAKES

You might think sake has an exclusive relationship with Japanese food. Nope, not the case.

It’s a complex but low-key beverage that doesn’t demand a diva spotlight but makes a lot of food taste better, throwing an umami kick. And they’re innocent of sulphites, preservatives, gluten and are less likely to whack you in the head with a hangover. And oh, the joy of sipping your first glass of sparkling sake!

You can learn more about this drink at the third annual Vancouver Sake Fest, Sept. 24 to Oct. 1. On Sept. 27, 100 sakes will be available for tasting at The Imperial (319 Main St.) from sake makers across Japan, Canada and the U.S. Tickets for this event are $55. Other events include trade tastings and seminars, sake-paired cooking classes, and sake dinners at restaurants like Stem, Boulevard Kitchen, Bao Bei, Shuraku, and Zakkushi on Main.
