NBA rolls out plan to hire more women

The NBA has told teams it will have several events in the coming months designed to help improve workplace cultures, as well as find more ways to have women in leadership roles around the league. The NBA’s memo, sent Wednesday, revealed plans to hold workshops in Atlanta and Los Angeles in mid-November on diversity and inclusion efforts. An event is also planned in North Carolina during the all-star break to expand “the pipeline of female talent in basketball operations roles.” In a separate memo last week, NBA commissioner Adam Silver told teams he wants to see more women hired around the league, particularly in leadership and supervisory positions.

McCullers supports young Astros fan

Houston pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. has offered advice and a free playoff ticket to an eight-year-old special-needs girl who was apparently yelled at by another fan for loudly cheering at an Astros game. McCullers on Wednesday tweeted “Chloe, don’t you EVER stop cheering ” and offered her a ticket for an Oct. 5 playoff game. Chloe’s mother, Monica Beaver, posted video from Sunday’s 6-2 Astros win over the Los Angeles Angels that appears to show another fan chiding the girl for being too loud. Beaver said her daughter has been diagnosed with a mood disorder that affects her emotions. Chloe cried after being scolded. McCullers encouraged Chloe “to cheer us on, as LOUD as you can” during Game 1 and says he’s honoured to give her a ticket.
