Leos look to repeat feat in cat-fight sequel
Key Matchup: Jerry Glanville’s sunglasses vs. Jarious Jackson
The Ticats’ offence, which leads the league in net offence (413.7 yards) gets all the attention, but the defence is quietly second in the league in net yards allowed (332.8), thanks to the defence of their mirrored aviator-wearing coordinator. Hamilton is good at forcing teams into short drives, leading the league with just 52.7 plays against per game. Jackson will have to figure out how to squeeze some more points out of a team that has the third-lowest offensive points average in the CFL.
THREE THINGS TO WATCH
UNDER CENTRE, ON TOP OF GAME
Hamilton QB Jeremiah Masoli came into last week’s game as the league leader in interceptions (13) and fumbles (8), but turned out the league’s top ball-hawking defence to the tune of 311 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions on a tidy 19-of-25 day. It was his leagueleading and team single-season record 10th 300-plus-yard game.
B.C. quarterback Jonathan Jennings also had his first 300-plusyard game in 11 months — going for 347 yards and two touchdowns. The last time he broke 300 with two touchdowns and no interceptions? Oct. 1, 2016.
GROUND N’ POUND
The Lions rushing game is playing like there’s a thorn in their paws. The three non- QB backs combined for just 52 yards in last week’s game, led by Jeremiah Johnson’s 25 yards on seven attempts. It’s why B.C. acquired running back Tyrell Sutton, a 5-foot-8, 215-pound battering ram, from Montreal this week. He’ll add physicality the team needs in short-yardage second-down plays, which the Lions convert at a leagueworst 55 per cent rate.
MIKE WHO? MIKE JONES
Aggressive play is why the B.C. secondary leads the league in interceptions. It’s also why they were torched for 138 yards and two touchdowns by Hamilton’s Mike Jones.
The Ticats wideout drew a 40yard pass interference on Anthony Orange in the second quarter, setting up John White’s eight-yard touchdown run. After B.C. went 2-and-out, Jones caught Orange peeking in the backfield to score a 75-yard touchdown. In the fourth quarter, he did it to Winston Rose, as he scored on a 55-yard catchand-run.
B.C. has to clean it up defensively; they had 109 penalty yards against them including 89 on pass interference calls.
