Sea to Sky corridor sees some tight races

West Vancouver has a new mayor in Mary-Ann Booth and two new councillor­s in Sharon Thompson and Marcus Wong.

“It was a nail-biter, that’s for sure,” said Booth from her victory celebratio­n.

A popular councillor, Booth’s run for the mayor’s office was complicate­d when former mayor Mark Sager joined the race in September.

The margin was close with Booth gathering 4,394 votes and Sager 4,373 in preliminar­y results.

Incumbents Peter Lambur, Craig Cameron, Nora Gambioli and Bill Soprovich were returned to council.

In Squamish, Coun. Karen Elliott was elected mayor over fellow Coun. Susan Chapelle.

Doug Race, Jenna Stoner, Armand Hurford, Eric Andersen, John French and Chris Pettingill were elected to council.

Lions Bay’s new mayor and all four councillor­s were acclaimed.

Mayor Ron McLaughlin is a two-term councillor for Lions Bay, a 10-year board member of the Salvation Army and is retired after a 32-year career as a corporate banker with CIBC.

Neville Abbott, Fred Bain, Norman Barmeier and Jaime Cunliffe will serve as councillor­s.

Former councillor Jack Crompton will serve as mayor of Whistler after running unconteste­d.

Cathy Jewett, Arthur De Jong, Jen Ford, Duane Jackson, John Grills and Ralph Forsyth were elected to council.

On Bowen Island, retired airline pilot Gary Ander was elected mayor over Melanie Mason by just two votes in the preliminar­y count.
