Shawn Conner lists five things to check out so you won’t forget about Simple Minds:

-

1 Don’t You (Forget About Me)

Of course they’re going to play their biggest hit, which was actually written by producer Keith Forsey and songwriter Steve Schiff, and immortalized in the 1985 John Hughes film The Breakfast Club.

2 Forty years and counting

In the sure-to-make-atleast-some-of-us-feel-old category, the band formed in Glasgow in 1977 and released its debut album Life In a Day in 1979.

3 Sarah Brown

As with any band that’s been around for four decades, Simple Minds has seen its share of members come and go. Vocalist Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill have remained to carry on the torch, while new members like Sarah Brown have reinvigorated the older material. Wisely, the band lets the backup vocalist have her turn on lead vocals, bringing a different dimension to backcatalogue gems like Book of Brilliant Things.

4 Walk Between Worlds

The band had a great mid-’80s run, with a trio of albums (including New Gold Dream, Sparkle in the Rain and Once Upon a Time) that took its sound from arty synth-driven post-punk to soul-stirring, U2-like arena rock. And hey, they played Live Aid! So Simple Minds could be forgiven for relying on past glories. But the band’s 18th album, this year’s Walk Between Worlds, has received praise, with reviewers calling it “newromantic pop on steroids” (the Irish Times), “a wonderful collection of dramatic, thoughtful songs” (pastemagazine. com), and “stirring” (the Daily Mail).

5 Live, they’ve still got it

From a recent review of the Walk Between Worlds Tour in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “Kerr sounded fantastic throughout the two-set concert, his voice creamy and booming, his trademark Scottish burr coating many lyrics. But the band, which also included guitarist/keyboardist Gordy Goudie and ace drummer Cherisse Osei … elevated Simple Minds’ sound to maximum effect.” AN EVENING WITH SIMPLE MINDS When: Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. Where: Orpheum Theatre Tickets: from $39 at livenation.com or 1-855-985-5000
