New West police seek info on missing man

- SCOTT BROWN

New Westminster police and Coquitlam Search and Rescue are searching for Cameron Whyte, a 47-year-old New Westminster man who has been missing since Tuesday night.

Police say Whyte left his home in the 500 block of Amess Street at 7:30 p.m. without his cellphone, wallet, keys, and vehicle.

He has not been seen or heard from since.

Whyte, an outdoors enthusiast, regularly walks the hiking trail north of Hume Park near the Brunette River.

Police say he has previously gone out for an overnight walk on the same trail, but returned home the following morning. “The Coquitlam Search and Rescue have been deployed to assist us with the search for Mr. Whyte, and we are asking for the assistance of the public in locating him,” said NWPD Sgt. Jeff Scott.

“When he left home there was nothing out of the ordinary, and he is not known to abuse drugs or alcohol.”

Whyte, who speaks with a distinct New Zealand accent, was wearing a blue fleece jacket, blue jeans and black gumboots. He may have also taken a flashlight with him.

He is described as a white male, six feet tall, with a slim build, balding with dark hair, blue eyes, with a short beard.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call New Westminster police at 604525-5411.
