Sunshine DreamLift fundraiser aims to give kids the trip of a lifetime

- Ben Forrest

In early December, at a hip, quintessentially Vancouver venue perched high above the city, guests will have a chance to change the lives of B.C. kids — and spread a little sunshine in the process.

The Sunshine Foundation of Canada, a national charity that fulfills dreams for kids and youth living with life-threatening illnesses and severe physical disabilities, is hosting the Sunshine DreamLift Celebration Fundraiser Tuesday, December 3, at the D/6 Douglas Hotel in Parq Casino.

“This is a fun, relaxed, smart-casual event that will help fulfill dreams for over 80 kids from Vancouver area and British Columbia,” said Nancy Sutherland, CEO of The Sunshine Foundation of Canada.

“D/6 is a lounge space for this event where guests can relax, mingle, enjoy live music after work — and support a great cause that makes a huge difference in the lives of these children.”

Sunshine hopes to raise $80,000 for the Sunshine DreamLift Program, which will carry about 80 kids, plus medical volunteers, on a chartered airplane from Vancouver to Disneyland Resort in California for a day of fun — and then back home again, all in just one day. Sunshine DreamLift Vancouver will be taking off the following week for Disney, on Wednesday, December 11 from Vancouver International Airport.

“It’s hard to overstate the value an experience like this brings to a child’s life,” said Sutherland. “This is the time when they’re forming their identities — their sense of who they are — and it’s crucial to their development to have experiences like a Sunshine DreamLift to instill newfound confidence, independence, and optimism.

DreamLift has been a core program for Sunshine for over 30 years, helping change the lives of children and youth, leading them to a brighter, more hopeful future.

“DreamLift is what we call a ‘Day of Yes.’ It’s a child-led day where kids living with complex medical needs get to make their own decisions. A DreamLift offers the opportunity to break from their medical routines and focus on just being a kid in the most magical place on earth.”

At the DreamLift fundraiser on Dec. 3, guests will have the chance to make a life-changing difference for a child through exclusive DreamLift opportunities, while talented musicians set the tone for the event.

Vancouver saxophonist Karla Sax will perform as guests filter in, and the popular duo Dueling Pianos will follow up later in the evening, offering a mix of classic piano tunes by Elton John and Billy Joel, sing-along anthems like “Bohemian

Rhapsody,” and more.

“Please join us,” said Sutherland. “Help us change the lives of kids participating in Sunshine DreamLift Vancouver 2019.”
