QUIROGA, Walter

-

On June 3, 2020 at the age of 90, Walter Quiroga passed away peacefully after a long struggle with dementia.

Walter was born October 27, 1929 in Cochabamba, Bolivia where he met his future wife, Jane Hood, who was serving as a missionary in La Paz, Bolivia. While she was finishing up her term, he immigrated to Canada in 1952 and worked in the gold mine at Bralorne until he saved up enough money to purchase a small house on Woodland Drive in Vancouver.

When Jane returned to Canada in 1954, they were married near her hometown in Regina, Saskatchewan. Afterwards they promptly set about raising a family in Vancouver starting with their firstborn Nelson in 1956, followed by Anita in 1958, then Colin in 1961 and finally Glenda in 1963.

In 1958 Walter became a Canadian citizen and, as the family grew in size and complexity, they moved to Point Grey, then Coquitlam, and finally to Langley. After working first at Safeway and then Federated Co-op, Walter retired in his 60’s to their new home at Cultus Lake where he spent his time swimming, hiking, and enjoying his six grandchildren; Jamie and Robert, children of Anita and Andy Lacki, Branden and Candice-jane, children of Colin and Michelle Quiroga, and Steven and Sarah, children of Glenda and Mike King.

In the new millennium Walter and Jane decided to move back to Vancouver where they settled in close to Nelson and June Quiroga in the West End. When Walter turned 80 signs of his illness were beginning so he and Jane decided to move to Langley where they could be closer to the rest of the family and take advantage of an assisted living environment at Avalon Gardens.

During his lifetime Walter was also blessed with five great grandchildren; Cassie from Jamie Lacki, Bruce and Ryan from Steven and Deyci King, and PJ and Clover from Sarah and Phil Glazebrook.

Walter was predeceased by Jane in 2015 after 60 years of marriage and, for the last 5 years, has been under the wonderful care of the staff at the Marwood long term care residence at Langley Memorial Hospital. Walter will always be remembered for his loving nature, dedication to his family, and wonderful sense of humour.

A private ceremony will take place at Valley View Funeral Home in Surrey.
