It is with deep and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sonja (Sunny) Alton, cherished Wife, Mother, Sister, Grandmothe­r, Greatgrand­mother, Aunt and Teacher. Predecease­d by her husband Monty in 2018, survived by her sisters Doreen and Roxanne, her children Debra, Michael (Trudy), Daniel, Andrea (Keith) and Jan (Michael). Her grandchild­ren Mark (Krystal) Emma, Capri, Anna, Jennifer (Steve), Jacob and Julianna (Avery). Great-grandchild­ren Jayden, Rory, Rowan and Alexander. Her Nieces and Nephews and her Coworkers and Friends.

Mom was born in Newcastle-upon-tyne, England and emigrated to Canada with her Mother and Sister after the Second World War. Mom lived in Medicine Hat, Alberta and Nanaimo, B.C. before moving to Ocean Falls, B.C. where she met and married her beloved husband Monty. Mom and Dad moved to Kitimat, B.C in the early 1950's and eventually moved their growing family to the Lower Mainland.

Mom was an intelligen­t, dynamic person who believed in the power of education and social responsibi­lity. While raising her family, she also worked outside the home and completed her university education. Mom retired as an instructor at Vancouver Community College, King Edward Campus. Mom was also a writer and stained-glass artist. Mom was a lifetime member of the CCF/NDP Party, served on the Douglas College Board and the New Vista Society Board.

The Alton family would like to thank the staff at St. Michael's Hospice, Burnaby for the excellent care they provided to our wonderful Mother during the last few months of her life.

A Celebratio­n of Life will be held at a later date after the COVID-19 crisis has passed.
