VOLKOW, Nicolas Michel

-

August 25, 1952 - June 20, 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nick Volkow on June 20, 2020. Nick was born in Orange, France on August 25, 1952 to a Ukrainian mother and Russian father. His family immigrated to Canada in 1956, arriving in Vancouver in 1957. Nick attended Macdonald Elementary and Templeton High schools, where he made many friendships that would last the rest of his life. Nick married Shirley in 1975, and they raised their three children in Burnaby. Nick drove truck for Safeway for almost 40 years, where he was a union representative who always advocated fiercely for his fellow employees. Nick served on the Burnaby Parks and Recreation Commission and was involved in local politics for several years before being elected to Burnaby City Council in 1996, where he served 8 consecutive terms up until his death. An outspoken councilor, Nick was passionate about making Burnaby a better place for families. Nick was an insatiable reader and had a passion for music, boasting an impressive vinyl collection dating back to his teens. Other hobbies included frequenting thrift stores and calling in to radio programs to colourfully share his views - much to the delight of the radio hosts and listeners.

Nick is predeceased by parents Josefa and Stefan, and his wife, Shirley. He is survived by his children, Nicole (Toby), Suzanne (Gavin) and Michael (Valerie), grandchildren Reese, Rylan, George, Wesley, Markus, Violet and Audrey, sister Helen, brothers George and Andre, and nieces, nephews and friends.

Nick spent his final months at home surrounded by his family and many, many loving friends and caregivers. We will remember him most for his exuberance, loyalty, generosity and humour. Nick's door was always open and he loved meeting new people and hearing their stories. He was always proud of his East End roots and instilled his values in his family. His booming voice and laughter will always ring through our hearts.

A service will be held in the future, at a time when all who want to attend to honour Nick can be included. Nick would not have wanted it any other way. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the East End Boys Club, which was close to Nick's heart, or the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund.
