Surrey mayor resting on advice of doctor

-

Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum says he had a health problem over the weekend, and will take a few days off this week to rest. In a statement issued Tuesday evening, McCallum gave few details, only saying that he required medical attention. “While the issue has been addressed, on the advice of my doctor, I will be taking a few days off to rest and recuperate. I am glad to say that I will be returning to my duties in time for the regular council meeting this Monday,” the statement reads. The creation of a Surrey police department was a key pillar of McCallum’s 2018 mayoral campaign. After the election, Surrey’s new council voted unanimously to terminate their agreement with the RCMP and transition to a municipal department, which is continuing. Coun. Doug Elford has been named acting mayor while McCallum recuperates.
