As British Columbians do their part to flatten the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, they're also prepping for the holidays and gift-giving season.
For Black Friday today, shop from the comfort of your home with the return of Postmedia's popular Support and Buy Local Auction. The special online event is now open until Dec. 1.
Shoppers can save big on holiday gifts and seasonal goods while supporting their favourite local brands. The online format also means that bidders have access to a wide range of products and services at their fingertips, from original artwork by local artists to personal protective equipment.

The previous fall auction provided deep discounts on more than $600,000 worth of goods.

Support and Buy Local features two different auction styles, depending on the item: Dutch and open. A Dutch auction is when a seller is offering more than one identical item for sale, so that there may be more than one winner — such as gift certificates. An open auction is the more familiar, real-time bidding method, in which bidders place their bid and the highest successful bid before
the auction closes wins.
For local businesses, the auction is a chance to invest at a time when cash flow is limited. Items from a business' existing inventory can be put up for sale. In return, Postmedia will provide the full retail value of all items sold toward future ads, regardless of the winning bids.
