As British Columbians do their part to flatten the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, they're also prepping for the holidays and gift-giving season.

For Black Friday today, shop from the comfort of your home with the return of Postmedia's popular Support and Buy Local Auction. The special online event is now open until Dec. 1.

Shoppers can save big on holiday gifts and seasonal goods while supporting their favourite local brands. The online format also means that bidders have access to a wide range of products and services at their fingertips, from original artwork by local artists to personal protective equipment.

“As B.C. faces the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, communities continue to show their boundless compassion and support for their neighbours,” says Mark Dowell, director of integrated ad sales at Postmedia in Vancouver.

“The Support and Buy Local Auction has become a successful platform for businesses and consumers to come together. Postmedia is proud to be able to offer a way for British Columbians to help local businesses and boost the economy — not to mention, get a head start on holiday shopping for a stress-free experience.”

The previous fall auction provided deep discounts on more than $600,000 worth of goods.

The current sale offers great deals on a plethora of items, with inventory continuing to expand during the sale period. Items include original photo prints from Royal Creations, Health Cana

da-approved face shields from Cap Shields, dining tables from Expand Furniture, gift certificates to California Closets and much more.

Support and Buy Local features two different auction styles, depending on the item: Dutch and open. A Dutch auction is when a seller is offering more than one identical item for sale, so that there may be more than one winner — such as gift certificates. An open auction is the more familiar, real-time bidding method, in which bidders place their bid and the highest successful bid before

the auction closes wins.

For local businesses, the auction is a chance to invest at a time when cash flow is limited. Items from a business' existing inventory can be put up for sale. In return, Postmedia will provide the full retail value of all items sold toward future ads, regardless of the winning bids.

The Support and Buy Local Auction closes Dec. 1. To view all auction items visit VancouverSun. com/supportlocal.
