Twinkle toes

We can't really remember the last time we wore high heels. Sure, block-heeled ankle boots and super low heels are still part of our repertoire, but stilettos? It's definitely been months since we attempted those. For starters, there's the fact that there really aren't that many places or events to wear them to; then there's our general preference these days for comfort and practicality. Nevertheless, in the festive season, so you might want to `zhuzh' things up a little — so why not a pair of fancy flats? Rebecca Tay showcases five that hit the mark without going over the top.

In our imaginations, we're the types of people that wear silk robes and velvet slippers or leather loafers around the house, martini in hand and hair perfectly blown out. In reality, our silk robe spends more time on the back of the door than on our actual back — but we have perfected plenty of cocktail recipes and, this holiday, will definitely be wearing these pearl-embellished slippers with anything and everything.

GO WITH GLITTER

We've long been fans of Miu Miu's glitter-covered shoes, whether it's a pair of lace-up oxfords or these cross-strap Mary Janes. They're super comfortable, yet will also add major pizzazz to any ensemble, whether that's jeans, a cashmere tracksuit, or a silk dress for a festive dinner.

BLUE CHRISTMAS

Whatever you thought of Emily in Paris, the outfits were a visual treat — even if they were sometimes ridiculous. No wonder, since they were by Patricia Field, the costume designer for Sex and the City, the show that made British shoe designer Manolo Blahnik a household name. Carrie's blue wedding shoe, the `Hangisi', is also available in a flat version, which we think is the perfect holiday style.

MAKE IT MAGENTA

Mules are one of our favourite shoe shapes: they're easy ( just slip on and go) and stylish, yet relaxed enough for everyday wear. This magenta satin pair, with its crystal-encrusted buckle, is the perfect accessory to lift an LBD or a jumpsuit. Finish with a sleek, low bun and a slick of lipstick and we'd say you're dressed and ready for dinner with the in-laws.
