A 10-year-old North Vancouver girl hospitalized earlier this month with a rare syndrome associated with COVID-19 has been released from hospital and is recovering at home with her family.

Postmedia News reported last week on a North Van mom sharing the story online of her 10-yearold daughter who was in B.C. Children's Hospital battling multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, known as MIS-C, a newly recognized, rare and serious condition that has been reported in kids and adolescents, and is linked to the COVID-19 virus.

The girl had come down with MIS-C this month after being diagnosed in November with COVID-19, and her mother shared her daughter's photo and story last week on social media. The mom, initially identified only as Tara, wrote: “Parents need to be aware that children can have serious complications well past that initial positive test.”

But this week brought some positive news for the family, as the North Shore News reported that the girl, Lynnmour Elementary student Jillian Rondeau, was released Monday after 10 days in hospital, and was recovering at home with her family.

The mother, Tara Rondeau, told North Shore News reporter Jane Seyd: “We have chosen to share our story so that parents can have an awareness of this new sickness. Information about it is trickling in slower than the volume of sick children. And to help everyone see that COVID is not just an old person's illness.”

B.C. had recorded four confirmed cases of MIS-C as of Dec. 17, according to a statement from the province's Ministry of Health.

MIS-C occurs in a small number of young people after recovering from COVID-19, and can be serious and even deadly, but most children get better with medical care, according to a statement from B.C. Children's Hospital. Symptoms include fever, stomach pain and vomiting, redness in fingers or toes, breathing problems or swollen lips, hands or feet.
