Dodgers sign relief pitcher Kahnle despite ailing elbow

-

The Los Angeles Dodgers are signing free agent reliever Tommy Kahnle to a two-year deal, The Athletic reported Wednesday.

MLB Network said the contract is valued at $5.25 million.

The 31-year-old right-hander spent the past three-plus seasons with the New York Yankees.

He is coming off Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in August and is expected to miss most or all of the 2021 season.

Kahnle made only one appearance in 2020, allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts in one inning in a 3-2 win at Washington on July 26.

He declined an outright assignment by the Yankees and became a free agent on Oct. 31.

Kahnle owns a career record of 9-9 with four saves and a 3.82 ERA in 285 bullpen appearances with the Colorado Rockies (2014-15), Chicago White Sox (2016-17) and Yankees. He has struck out 344 batters and walked 132 in 2772/3 innings.

TIGERS LAND URENA IN ONE- YEAR DEAL

The Detroit Tigers announced Wednesday they have signed freeagent pitcher Jose Urena to a oneyear major-league contract.

Urena, 29, spent the past six seasons with the Miami Marlins, putting together a 32-46 record with a 4.60 ERA through 98 career starts. He struck out 406 and walked 208.

The Detroit Free Press cited the one-year deal as $3.25 million.

After missing the first six weeks of the 2020 season with COVID-19, he started only five games (5.40 ERA) before his season ended after he was hit by a comebacker off his right (pitching) forearm.

“Once Jose became available, we had him identified as a player that could come in and help our ball club win games,” Tigers general manager Al Avila said. “We're excited to add his experience pitching at a high level, and know he'll contribute to our young staff in significant ways. Jose has a great ability to navigate a lineup and limit damage, while keeping his team in the game, which is exactly the stability we're looking for heading into the 2021 season.”

ANDRIESE INKS ONE- YEAR PACT WITH RED SOX

Right-hander Matt Andriese agreed to a one-year, $2.1-million deal with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, putting the reliever on his fourth different team in four years.

Andriese, 31, went 2-4 with the Los Angeles Angels last season and had a 4.50 ERA in 32 innings over 16 appearances. The deal with the Red Sox has a club option for 2022.

Considered a swing man with starting potential, Andriese did have one start with the Angels last season and has 50 starts across 183 career appearances. He is 26-34 lifetime with a 4.57 ERA for the Tampa Bay Rays (2015-18), Arizona Diamondbacks (2018-19) and Angels (2020).

WHITE SOX EXPECT TO SIGN CUBAN PROSPECT

Top international prospect Yoelqui Cespedes is expected to sign with the Chicago White Sox when the international signing period opens next month, MLB.com reported.

He reportedly will receive a signing bonus in the $2-million range.

The White Sox have not confirmed the pending signing of Cespedes, the 23-year-old half-brother of former all-star and free-agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

The younger Cespedes defected from the Cuban national team in June 2019 while playing in New York. He settled in the Bahamas and later was declared an MLB free agent.

The outfielder previously played for Cuba's World Baseball Classic and Caribbean Series teams.
