Clarence-Rockland to post $318,000 deficit for 2017
The City of Clarence-Rockland expects to post a deficit of $318,071 for 2017.
The City has recently released its final report on the 2017 budget. The fiscal year officially ended November 30, 2017.
A deficit was posted in corporate revenues and expenses, flood expenses, and for the Protective services, Day care services, Public transit, and Public library services departments. Daycare services ran the largest deficit at more than half a million dollars. The $504,400 deficit is attributed to $260,000 less made in revenues in 2017 than the previous year, paired with employee salaries running $276,000 over budget.
Flood expenses showed the second largest deficit at $153,473. This is the portion of the City’s expenses that were not eligible for government funding. Public transit ran a deficit of $35,615 due to the increase in bus contract fees.
On the other hand, the City ran a surplus in Corporate services and City council, Finances, Infrastructure and planning as Community services. Of note, the City saved more than $360,000 last year in Corporate and City council services.
Savings in salaries, advertising and in city council committees and meal expenses, amongst others, are attributed to this sur- plus. The City also saved in the financing department by being more efficient with auditing and by completing more projects internally.
The overall deficit of $318,071 will be managed by using the accumulated surpluses at the next year’s end. The following chart shows the precise projected surplus and deficit amounts for the year 2017.
