WINDSOR — David French finished two strokes off the pace but that was good enough to help lift his University of Waterloo Warriors to a third consecutive Ontario university’s team golf championship this week.

French’s two-day two-under 140 at the Ambassador Golf Club gave him second place behind men’s individual champ, Waterloo native and conference all-star Austin Ryan, from Wilfrid Laurier University, who finished alone in first.

For the Warriors men’s team, their three-peat is the event’s first since the University of Toronto captured four in a row from 1960 to 1963.

The Warriors — comprised of conference all-star Jake Adams, Tyson Turchanski, Devin Bartlett and Jordy Denomme as well as French, who was also named a conference all-star — finished with a team total of 573 through the two-day event, six strokes ahead of the nearest challengers, the Western Mustangs.

Laurier’s men finished fourth, 14 shots behind UW.

Waterloo’s women, who completed the two-day event with a combined total of 478, took the silver medal in the team event for the third straight year. Toronto won the event.

UW’s Claire Konning and Laura Lunna were named conference all-stars.

In the men’s competition, Ryan, who shot two consecutive 69s, became the first Golden Hawk to win the event since 2002.

Warriors coach Dave Hollinger was named the OUA’s coach of the year.
