Take responsibility

Re: Court rules garage liable in part for teen’s injuries — Oct. 12

The ruling the Ontario Court of Appeal that a Paisley, Ont., garage owner was 37 per cent responsible for a brain injury to a 15 year-old boy is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. It’s a terrible tragedy, but finding the person who actually stole the car after consuming beer (supplied by his mother), vodka and weed, to be only 23 per cent responsible is absolutely ludicrous. The mother was found only 30 per cent responsible. What message is this sending to this up and coming criminal about his actions? It seems to becoming acceptable for people to have no accountability for their actions and society just reinforces that.

The only thing the garage owner is guilty of is being a trusting individual and not fortifying his private property against common criminals.

It’s time we turn things around and make people take responsibility for themselves again. What’s next? If my barbecue isn’t chained to my porch and someone steals it and burns themselves, will I be held liable?

I hope this case is appealed to the Supreme Court of Canada, and maybe they can figure out what the provincial court judges have been drinking (or smoking). Kevin Betts Elmira
