Be a blade runner and get in a skate — or sew up your weekend

- Record staff

WATERLOO REGION — Go out for a romantic skate ahead of Valentine’s Day this weekend, or learn how to sew a nifty little Valentine’s gift for a loved one. Stay indoors and watch free flicks at Kitchener Public Library. There’s a lot to choose from this weekend. Here’s a shortlist: Pop by Waterloo Public Square on Saturday afternoon for a free, Valentine’s Day family-friendly ice skate. The theme is love birds and organizers encourage people to dress up as a bird or something to do with love or Valentine’s Day. There will be themed music and an art activity for children.

Want to learn how to sew your own accessories? A group of makers will host a family-friendly sewing drop-in at Kwartzlab Makerspace in Kitchener on Sunday.

Projects at the sew-a-thon include hair bows, bow ties, drawstring bags, pom poms and paper cards. Admission is by donation. Hot drinks will be served. Most activities are suitable for ages 7 and up.

Do you want to stay indoors this weekend? Pop by the Kitchener Public Library’s main branch for free flicks on Saturday and Sunday at the library’s 200-seat theatre.

Saturday afternoon’s free flick is “Ninth Floor,” a Canadian documentary about students who occupied a ninth floor computer lab at Sir George Williams University in 1969 to protest the university’s mishandling of racist accusations.

On Sunday you can watch “Kubo and the Two Strings,” an animated film about a boy who sets out to find a magical suit of armour that belonged to his father in order to fight off an evil spirit from the past.
