Long Weekend has powwow, dinosaurs, films

WATERLOO REGION — There are a lot of family-friendly activities across Waterloo Region this weekend and on Family Day on Monday. Here’s a short list: Saturday and Sunday Check out a powwow on Saturday at Conestoga College. There will be aboriginal drumming and dancing, artisan and craft vendors as well as traditiona­l food. Tickets are $5 per person, kids under five years old are free and students can get in with a valid student card and food bank donation. The powwow is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the recreation centre on the college’s Doon campus.

Dinosaurs have invaded the Waterloo Region Museum. Take a peek at the museum’s Tyrannosau­rs: Meet the Family exhibit and learn about geology, dinosaurs and more. Regular museum admission applies. This event runs on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Monday too.

Spend Sunday afternoon indoors and watch “The BFG” at Kitchener Public Library’s theatre, located at the library’s main branch on Queen Street North. The free flick begins at 2 p.m. Monday Celebrate Black History Month this year at Kitchener City Hall. Bring on the Sunshine festival celebrates African culture and community with drum circles, live music, workshops, storytelli­ng, food and more from noon to 5 p.m. on Monday.

Pop by Themuseum’s MakerSpace as they team up with tech startup Hive Waterloo Region to offer a family hack jam from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn to code, program a wood robot or make your own vinyl stickers. Themuseum will offer discounted admission all weekend long: $8.95 per person and $29.95 for a family of two adults and two children.

The Hespeler Idea Exchange library in Cambridge will be open from noon to 4 p.m. with activities for children. All other branches of Idea Exchange are closed on Monday.

Enjoy a free wintery family day at Rockwood Park on Monday. From 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. there will be horse-drawn wagon rides, hikes, snowshoein­g and more.

Stay indoors at the W.G. Johnson Centre in Cambridge on Monday. There will be arts, crafts and children’s entertainm­ent. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 31 Kribs St. Admission is $18 for a family, $6 for a child and $7 for an adult.

Go skating free of charge at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Food and donations are being accepted on behalf of the Food Bank of Waterloo Region and Waterloo Walks for Autism Speaks.
