Resurrection hockey teams have encouraging starts
Jennifer Bean, Rachel Buttinger and Grace Davis did the scoring as the Resurrection Phoenix blanked the St. David Celtics, 3-0, at RIM Park in the first game of the best-of-three District 8 girls’ high school hockey final.
Morgan Heinbuch-Flilpowitsch recorded the shutout for Resurrection, which will attempt to wrap up the series Thursday afternoon at Moses Springer Arena.
Resurrection also won the opening game of the best-of-three District 8 boys’ hockey final as Josh Helgerman scored the deciding goal in a 4-3 win over St. David.
The second game is scheduled for Thursday at RIM Park.
The best-of-three semifinal series in the Waterloo County boys’ hockey league also started Tuesday, with the Huron Heights Huskies scoring a 4-1 win over the Sir John A. Macdonald Highlanders and the Grand River Renegades notching a 1-0 win over the Elmira Lancers.
Nolan Lafrance, with two, Chad Meyer and Sahrung Sehra scored for the Huskies and Taylor Lenizky replied for the Highlanders. Nic Andreotte replied for the Renegades. Both series resume Thursday.
In basketball play, Raghav Sharma scored 12 points and Hanani Ujullu added 10 in the Eastwood Rebels’ 63-44 win over the Huron Heights Huskies in a CWOSSA qualifying game. Kuel Thomas scored 20 points for Huron Heights and Austin Ernst-Finnie added seven.
The Rebels host Owen Sound District Secondary School on Wednesday afternoon with a berth at this week’s six-team CWOSSA championship on the line. The Sir John A. Macdonald Highlanders and Waterloo Collegiate Vikings, who will play in the WCSSAA final on Wednesday night at Cameron Heights, have already qualified for CWOSSA along with the District 8 champion St. Benedict Saints.
