St. Benedict opens with win at OFSAA

Seyed leads way as Saints beat Ottawa squad

Zubair Seyed scored a gamehigh 25 points Monday to lead the St. Benedict Saints to a 65-41 win over Ottawa’s St. Patrick’s Irish in the opening game of the OFSAA triple-A boys’ basketball championsh­ip in North Bay.

The Saints, who are the No. 1 seed at the 16-team tournament, received 18 points from Evan Rodenburg and 11 from Justin Malnerich. The Cambridge school will play its second game Tuesday morning against the No. 16 St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Bears of North Bay.

The No. 6 Oakwood Barons of Brampton recorded a 74-23 romp over the Bears on Monday. The winner of the Saints-Bears clash will advance to a quarter-final game on the championsh­ip side Tuesday night.

The No. 16 St. David Celtics split a pair of games at the OFSAA double-A boys’ basketball championsh­ip in Sault Ste. Marie and will play again Tuesday.

The Celtics moved on with a 73-49 win over No. 13 St. Joseph as Brent Lasovich scored 28 points in the win. The Celtics dropped a 58-56 decision to St. Ignatius in their opener after being outscored 18-3 in the fourth quarter. Lasovich had 27 points in the loss.

The No. 8 Rockway Flames recorded a 76-57 win over No. 19 Cardinal Carter at the OFSAA single-A boys’ basketball championsh­ip in Windsor. Avery Martin led the way with 41 points. Rockway will face No. 3 E.J. Lajeunesse in its next outing with the winner moving on to the championsh­ip quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, in Barrie, the No. 4 Jacob Hespeler Hawks are 1-2 after the opening day of play at the OFSAA triple-A girls’ volleyball championsh­ip.

The Hawks defeated No. 13 Innisdale, 2-0 (25-16, 25-9), but fell to No. 17 North Toronto, 2-0 (25-20, 25-17), and No. 7 St. Maximilian Kolbe, 2-1 (14-25, 25-20, 15-10). They wrap up the round-robin portion of the tournament Tuesday against No. 10 St. Mildred’s Lightbourn.

The semifinal matchups are set at the CWOSSA girls’ triple-A hockey championsh­ip in Brantford, with the Huron Heights Huskies facing the Elmira Lancers in one game and the Brantford Mustangs meeting the Cameron Heights Golden Gaels in the other.

The semifinal matchups at the CWOSSA triple-A boys’ hockey tournament in Fergus have also been determined, with the Grand River Renegades meetings the Huron Heights Huskies in one and Brantford’s St. John’s College Green Eagles facing the Orangevill­e Bears in the other.

The St. David Celtics went 3-0 Monday at the CWOSSA boys’ single-A/double-A championsh­ip in Owen Sound and will play in a semifinal game Tuesday.
