Dictating decorum

Re: Cambridge brings in citizen code of conduct — March 30

Let’s not kid ourselves here. If Mayor Doug Craig and everyone who voted for the sportsplex at Conestoga College would have walked into meetings filled with applause, this would not be happening. This ‘code’ is basically telling the people of Cambridge that our council doesn’t want to hear when their constituents are unhappy with the decisions being made. It is choking the voice of the people. Coun. Jan Liggett says she voted for this based on packages being delivered to the mayor and the city manager. Sorry, Jan, but none of these rules would stop that happening. You voted for this for one reason, to stop the people being heard. This is ridiculous and a bullying tactic by our city, and we are not fooled by it for a second. To not allow people to clap or boo at town meetings is childish and immature.

Over the years, I have agreed and disagreed with many things in Cambridge, but never have I been so angry and upset that as a taxpayer I am being dictated too on how I can behave at a public forum. This is not a rowdy city, filled with thugs who are going to assault our council, even if Jan Ligget makes out that we are to justify her vote. If city hall thinks this will stop people protesting about a sportsplex in a location they don’t want, they are sadly mistaken. I’m stunned our council would stoop this low. Maureen Boyce Cambridge
