Phoenix score shutout as semifinali­sts are determined in District 8 soccer

Jonathan Pereira, Mahan Sharifi, Jordan Henriques and Marlon Hernandez did the scoring, and Xavier Gomes recorded the shutout, as the Resurrecti­on Phoenix blanked the Père-René-de-Galinée Chevaliers, 4-0, to advance to a semifinal playoff matchup with the St. Mary’s Eagles in the District 8 senior boys’ soccer league.

The St. Benedict Saints will face the St. David Celtics in Monday’s other semifinal after the Saints scored a 4-2 win over the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs in the other quarter-final.

Connor Meneses with two, Cyle Costa and Marius Pop scored for St. Benedict. Eric Leite had both Monsignor Doyle goals.

In District 8 girls’ soccer play, Viktoria Quilty and Sophie Pereira scored for St. Benedict in a 2-1 quarter-final victory over Monsignor Doyle.

Katelyn Damaso replied for the Mustangs.

Details of the second quarterfin­al between Père-René-de-Galinée and St. Mary’s weren’t posted to the District 8 website.

Resurrecti­on and St. David will host semifinal games Monday.

Meanwhile, the semifinals are set in the Waterloo County girls’ rugby after the KCI Raiders, Waterloo-Oxford Crusaders, Waterloo Vikings and Forest Heights Trojans won quarter-final games Wednesday.

KCI defeated Elmira, 36-12; Waterloo-Oxford blanked Huron Heights, 51-0; WCI topped Bluevale, 10-7; and Forest Heights downed Sir John A. Macdonald, 17-5. KCI will face Forest Heights in one semifinal, and WaterlooOx­ford meets WCI in the other.
