Huron Heights’ Taylor wins two gold; Ghazarian dominates

KINCARDINE — Ryan Taylor turned in a pair of gold-medal performanc­es on the second and final day of the Central Western Ontario track and field championsh­ip.

The fifth-year Huron Heights student won the senior boys’ long jump Thursday with a 6.79-metre effort and won the triple jump with a 13.92-metre result.

In both events, Kenny Siharath of Cameron Heights was second and Isaac Mapp of Preston finished third. The top five performers in each event advance to next week’s OFSAA West championsh­ip in London.

In other results, Sevanne Ghazarian of St. Benedict was dominant in the senior girls’ 3,000metre race, winning in 9:52.26 and close to a full minute ahead of the second-place finisher.

Paige Sweeney of Cameron Heights won the junior girls’ 3,000metre race.

Two local athletes were winners in the long hurdles, with Caleb Timm of Bluevale winning the junior boys’ 300-metre distance and Miguel Robles Villarreal of St. Mary’s winning the senior boys’ 400-metre race.

Korbett Cator of Grand River won the junior boys’ 800-metre race and Mackenzie Morgan edged KCI teammate Christine Laurie in the senior girls’ 800metre race. John Fish of Sir John A. Macdonald won the senior boys’ 800.

Marcus Penaloza of St. Benedict edged Owen Read of Elmira in the senior boys’ 200-metre dash, and the St. Mary’s team of Miguel Robles Villarreal, Marcus Kemp, Joshua Jackson, and Ruairi Tiernan won the open boys’ 4x400-metre relay.

In field events, Alexandria Webb of St. Benedict won the midget girls javelin and was third in the midget girls’ triple jump. Maia Rodrigue of Grand River and Emma Lemieux of KCI tied for first place in the triple jump and Nicole Paine of Galt was fourth.

Alissa Melvin of St. David won the senior girls’ triple jump and Tamara Grahovac of Cameron Heights was second.

Adam Tunnicliff­e of Galt won the junior boys’ javelin, Kevin He of Huron Heights was second and Aedan Bell of Waterloo-Oxford was third.

Joel Watson of Jacob Hespeler won the midget boys’ triple jump ahead of Jaxen Reeve of Huron Heights, Adrian O’Toole of St. David won the junior boys’ high jump.

Cole Belkwell of St. Mary’s won the senior boys’ shot put.
