KITCHENER — A Hamilton man charged with murder in connection with the stabbing death of a Kitchener woman was spotted in Tennessee on Saturday.

Ager Mohsin Hasan, 24, faces a seconddegree murder charge in 22-year-old Melinda Vasilije’s death on April 28. He fled to the United States that same day.

Insp. Mike Haffner of Waterloo Regional Police said Hasan was seen in Tennessee on Saturday. Hasan had a conversation with someone there who recognized him as a wanted man. Local police were notified on Monday. Haffner said local police are in contact with police agencies in Tennessee and other southern states, down to the U.S.-Mexico border. Hasan could be headed to Mexico, police said.

Officers are using social media platforms to put out Hasan’s photograph and a description of him.

“Investigators are diligently working with various police agencies in areas he was ob-

served to get the message out,” Haffner said. “This is concentrated and collaborative approach.”

Police last made contact with Hasan on May 17 through social media, but his whereabouts were unknown at the time. They asked him to turn himself in to local law enforcement.

Vasilije was found dead in her apartment on Country Hill Drive in Kitchener on April 28. Cause of death was multiple stab wounds.

Vasilije and Hasan had been in a relationship for about a year.

Hasan’s previously last known reported whereabouts were in Erie County, Pa., on April 28 where a man matching his description was seen switching licence plates in a Walmart parking lot.

Video footage shows a man removing a Pennsylvania state licence plate from a parked vehicle with the number EZV1654 and a police medallion attached to it, according to Pennsylvania State Police. The man was then seen attaching the stolen licence plate to a black Honda HR-V.

For the past few weeks, police have been looking for a black Honda HR-V with two possible licence plates. The other one is an Ontario plate, BPKT509.

Hasan also faces three counts of breach of recognizance for an alleged break-and-enter and alleged assaults at Vasilije’s Kitchener apartment on April 3. Police have said Vasilije was not a victim of the alleged assaults.

Hasan was under a court order to stay out of Waterloo Region and to not contact Vasilije.

Police ask anyone in contact with Hasan to encourage him to turn himself in to police in the U.S. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 519-653-7700, ext. 8666.
