The Canadian flag is for all

Re: Pride flag will fly outside all public schools — June 1

I think it is wonderful that the public school district aims to be inclusive of everyone regardless of race, religion or gender. I would expect no less of a publicly funded educational system.

What I don’t understand is how raising a flag of one particular group falls under an “inclusive of all” atmosphere? I think the Canadian flag alone covers all races, religions and genders and personal preferences. There are many different groups that individuals within the school system fall into, and I have always felt that the Canadian flag covered them.

If we want things truly equal, then all these other groups need a flag and a month (except there won’t be enough months) and then the whole thing becomes ridiculous. Won’t people know they are included by how we treat them, not because we fly a flag? As issues arise in individual schools, by all means, provide education related to those issues whether they are based in racism, sexual bullying of any sort to any people of any gender or orientation, or religions, or misunderstandings of mental illnesses, or learning differences etc.

I am fully supportive of all who call Canada home receiving the respect and inclusion that humans deserve on the basis alone of being human. The details of expressing that humanity are just extra details. I believe that these are Canadian values and therefore adequately represented under the Canadian flag. Another flag added to the Canadian flag is redundant and goes against an “inclusive for all” mentality by setting one group apart when none should be set apart. Lisa Farnell Cambridge
