Re: Worst food crisis in 70 years need attention — June 24

One of my earliest memories is the profound shock I felt at first seeing images of starving children on television. Now, some 40 years later — despite all of our technological advances — I’m faced with these images yet again, in Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen. The United Nations has declared the looming threat of famine for 20 million of our fellow humans as the worst humanitarian crisis since the Second World War. Yes, conflict complicates the situation in three of

these countries, but yes, we can intervene and avert the worst of this catastrophe with sustained aid delivered now. So far the world’s response has been untenably lacklustre. As painful and unimaginable as it is, we must not turn away.

Until June 30, the Canadian government will match all donations made to a host of organizations through their Famine Relief Fund. I urge Canadians to give generously. We can no longer deny we are one small world; our collective humanity will be forever scarred if we let this tragedy continue. Krista Lynne Koch Guelph
