Only in Canada would we see a government willing to pay a citizen who purportedly killed an ally and wounded another. This is insanity.

I recall seeing Omar Khadr’s mother and sister on television some years ago. Their vitriolic hate of Canada and Canadians has remained branded in my memory. Omar’s father was a well known terrorist who was very willing to send his son into battle against all who did not agree with his jihadist views. His mother, as I recall, was in full agreement. I found myself wondering why this family was allowed into Canada in the first place.

It is unfortunate that Omar suffered the way he undoubtedly did at the hands of his own family and his captors, but he is still alive. One cannot say the same for U.S. Special Forces soldier Chris Speer who was allegedly killed by a grenade lobbed by the then 15year-old Khadr.

Imagine how incensed Canadians would be if the situation was reversed and the Americans were willing to pay a huge amount of money to one of their citizens who killed a Canadian soldier. The Americans are our allies. What has the Khadr family done for this country?

Ten million dollars would go a long way to offer comfort to Canadian heroes who fought for Canada. It seems we are willing to pay off a person who fought against us while the men and women of our armed forces are summarily ignored.

Our federal politicians need to stop being suckers and get some intestinal fortitude. O Canada, we had better stand on guard for thee because the ruling party at the federal level certainly isn’t. Lorraine Williams Kitchener
